I've done the on prem bare metal (no autoscaling) self hosting for sites under 5m hits a month and it is a fair bit less hairy than AWS, but would get nastier than AWS if you had to push it to handle more traffic. What would you charge though? Basically at this point you start to realize your billable for this might not be much less than what Aquia or Pantheon charge. Having just gone through this myself I can say if you roll your own using AWS you will likely come out of it thinking "yeah this might be worth it if I had 10 or more paying clients to resell it to". We recently used eApps as it was cost effective choice for a couple of clients. Weve used a variety of hosts for our Drupal clients (Acquia, Pantheon, Rackspace, Blackmesh). It is worth noting that this is their enterprise tier so you do get a greater level of support and access than if you went with one of their fixed price tiers. Curious of anyone has used eApps for hosting Drupal sites and what you think.
Note: Due to s recent announcement that Drupal 7. 5 years ago I priced out a 3m page view a month site with a 500k page view a month sister site and it came out to around 45k a year. Acquia will be providing extended Drupal 7.x application support after support from the Drupal Association ends. Pantheon also gets quite pricey when you reach the "Call us for a quote" phase.

According to the about us page on the Acquia website, the solution was created to scale Drupal, make it easier, and empower Drupalists worldwide. Acquia was developed purposefully for Drupal. And if it is getting less than 1 million page views a month then it is pretty much not an option. I'd say if your site is getting north of 50 million page views a month then Acquia is a no brainer.
